Installing Windows 2000 on modern hardware
So I've always wanted to install Windows 2000 on my Dell Latitude E6320, but it was really hard. Recently I found a way to install it. This will erase all of your existing data.
1 Before doing anything, go into your BIOS and set the drive operation method as RAID and set the boot method to Legacy BIOS.
2 First, make a FreeDOS installer with the image, don't use the FreeDOS option built in on Rufus. Make a folder called W2K on the install USB then mount the Windows 2000 ISO and copy everything to the folder. Then, install it to the hard drive you want to install Windows 2000 on.
3 Before restarting, select return to DOS instead of rebooting. Type in "xcopy (the letter at the front of the line of the command prompt you are typing at):/w2k D:/ /e/c/h/i" without the quotes and press enter. And then, you type in reboot and press enter.
4 When the computer reboots, remove the USB and boot into FreeDOS with the default option. And then, type in "cd w2k" without the quotes and press enter, and type in "cd i386" without the quotes and press enter, and type in "winnt" without the quotes and press enter. The Windows 2000 setup program will launch, and you install it normally.
5 When the computer reboots, go into the BIOS and set the drive to IDE or ATA mode, save changes and exit. Now the system will boot. Do the setup as usual. And when it reboots, you have installed Windows 2000.
6 You need to use the TAB key and the ENTER key for the Out-of-box-experience.
7 (you can skip this step if it doesn't give you an error about USBHUB20.sys) When it install drivers press Shift and F10 at the same time to get a command prompt. It should be in C:/Windows/system32, type in "cd drivers" without the quotes and press enter. Next, you type in "delete USBHUB20.sys" without quotes and press enter.
Continue the setup and you have Windows 2000 fully installed. Install the drivers and you now have a fully working install of Windows 2000.
